An extract from a short thought-experiment I am writing:

The Moon is has an important phrase by Crowley in The Book of Thoth once again:

One is reminded of the mental echo of subconscious realization, of that supreme iniquity which mystics have constantly celebrated in their accounts of the Dark Night of the Soul. But the best men, the true men, do not consider the matter in such terms at all. Whatever horrors may afflict the soul, whatever abominations may excite the loathing of the heart, whatever terrors may assail the mind, the answer is the same at every stage: "How splendid is the Adventure!"

And this can be interpreted in a number of ways, but in my view, the most obvious is "Continue forward!". And J. Daniel Gunther in Initiation in the Aeon of the Child (pg 94-95) gives us a very important hint about the function of the Moon in this symbolic sense:

Now, one may look at this graphic depiction in one of two ways: the glass may be either half-empty, or half-full depending on your point of view. The stream is either drying up, or it is beginning to show signs of Life. The specific wording used to describe this stream gives us the clue: "serum tinged with blood." This does not indicate menopause, but the beginning of the menstrual period.

After ignoring it for a year or two, the Nimheil website has been updated and upgraded to a real content management system. A lot of the cruft has been removed. The next trick is to allow the blog to properly integrate in it.

I may end up minimizing it some more as I see fit, as I suspect it is far too wordy for a decent website.

Idle Thoughts : Formula of Incantation

Whilst reading the book Chaldean Magic : Its Origin and Development (1878) by François Lenormant, I came across a number of early Egyptian formulas of incantation used to protect the user of them from harm (the first from Crocodiles, the second from more Crocodiles, and the third, here, against general harm) and it made me think a little and contemplate much:

O thou that bringest back the voice of the guardian
Horus has pronounced in a low voice the incantation:
“Country!”
May Isis, my kind mother, pronounce the invocation for me, as well as
my sister Nephthus,
May they remain in the act of greeting,
on the south of me,
on the north,
on the west,
on the east!
In order that the jaws of the lions and the hyenas be sealed,
the head of all the animals with long tails,
who eat flesh and drink blood ;
that they may facinate (me) ;
to lift up their hearing ;
to hold me in darkness ;
to make me avoid light ;
to render me invisible,
instantly in the night!

What caught my attention is Lenormant's analysis demonstrating that the Egyptian spells had the enchanter identifying him or herself with the God-figure, and thus becoming divine as suggested by the Thelemic quotes:

There is no god but man.¹

and

Every man and every woman is a star.²

Of course, there are other portions mentioned futher along in the same chapter, that refer to other spells that call down Gods directly, to which the text gives suggestion that they answer if their true-and-proper-name is used within the ritual or spell.

However, at this point I realised I should read the book from the beginning rather than starting at a randomly selected page. And upon first investigation, starting at the beginning and moving towards the end is rewarding. One of those gems that availed itself to appear was a comparison between the Egyptian techniques and the Chaldean techniques. The Chaldeans, Lenormant suggests, used prayer, and incantations to communicate with an intermediatory spirit or god, who then took their request to a higher god, which used words-of-power to enact their Will. The Egyptian magicians, as a contrast, were documented using spells and words-of-power to raise themselves to divinity and to even directly command the gods at times.

I can see valid comparisons to both of these within the Themelmic magical doctrines. The Chaldean method of an intermediatory spirit has resonance in the Holy Guardian Angel. After the Knowledge and Conversation, your HGA guides you until the point where you Cross the Abyss. As a result, the HGA is the spirit that is initially in between yourself and communicating with the divine within the Supernals.

A comparison (at least from what I can find in publicly available material and to the best of my knowledge) to the Egyptian words-of-power exists in Liber DCLXXI vel Pyramidos where the initiate recites the word of power during an invokation:

Asar Un-nefer! I invoke
The Four-fold Horror of the Smoke
Unloose the Pit! By the dread Word
Of Power – that Set-Tyhpon hath heard -
SAZAZSAZAZANDATSANSAZAZ³

And in some instances, in the grade of the Magus of the A.A., pronouncing a Word of the Æon elevates them to that divinity. And this then leaves me with the idea to explore historical methodologies that The Prophet may have read about and experienced and then potentially used in his development of his working system. So by reading through a book written 131 years ago, I found pieces of translations from material much older again, that gave me a small glimmer of insight into things that were perhaps the intent of Crowley in his work, and at theleast gives me more insight into my own magical actions.

Good evening readers that are not reading.

Quiet on this front here, as there has been a lot going on locally that won't make sense to anyone that is not a Thelemite. But it is all quite interesting. However, I found the following:

Rumination on releases

I suspect most 'underground' artists ruminate now and again on how to best do releases. I suspect starvation whilst saving funds is the best solution, although that is somewhat harder when one has a child that needs feeding and unholy debts left by previous partners. Oh well, that aside.

This is purely here for my own laying down of thoughts, rather than a cry-for-help or asking advice. Although should any generous benefactor wish to step in, or a world-weary traveler wish to offer their thoughts, I will not complain.

I have two releases that I want to get out.

The first, 'Upon her forehead was a name written...', my epic ode to BABALON. Originally picked up by a restarting-label in the UK who decided that they may have bitten off more than they can chew, and dumped a lot of their upcoming lineup. At least they released a few things, one or two of which I bought and found to be the highest quality.

The second, the soundtrack to the urban exploration movie / documentary 'Deserted Hospitals II'. Due to the audio licensing, and the director not having the money to pay me for it, I have full rights to release the audio as I see fit. It looks to be basically (at this point) a double-disc type release.

I think my first step is to get out this creative funk, and get both of them out there to be heard by a number of suitable labels and at least try to see if anyone wants to pick it up. Fortune isn't required, just some product time with fairly industry respected venues (At least in the dark ambient field. I doubt EMI would be interested).

At the worst they can say "...this is really bad, go away...", but based on past (positive) experience, it will most likely be "This material is quite good, but at the moment our roster is full, but we'll happily do distribution..", which goes back to the original rumination of releasing the material.

Other alternatives is self release, which is becoming viable, in a way. Pressed CD is not really an option, unless my lotto tickets give me a couple of thousand dollars. One never knows, I suspect. The other option is professional printed CDRs, which personally I don't mind, and own quite a number from underground labels. Kind of like the tape culture of the 80s. Some of which I have (as a side note) picked up from auctions, giving me some nice and rare hand prepared Tapes.

Professionally printed CDRs. 49 of the Babalon epic, and 49 of the double disc. 150 discs in total more or less. At about 3$ production per disc, give or take. It is do-able. But not for a few months.

Of course, then there is the horrible bit of selling. But I am sure distribution deals will be a bit easier than label deals in themselves.

Sometime back, I did ask for donations. Total received, $aus20. Which would pay for some postage. I think I may have to return that donation, whilst appreciated, is unfair of me to accept.

Book Review

The Red Goddess

I enjoy the mythos of BABALON. There is something about powerful and sexual female energies that sits right with me (having worked in the past with Lilith and Morrigan, whom I still work with). But BABALON is the best aspects of both in a single entity.

So when I heard about this book, I insisted on buying it. Although the first time I heard about it, the first 2007 print run had been done (156 copies) and was sold out in quick time. And then I found a 2008 run being done, 777 copies (I got #63) with 49 hand bound leather editions being made. I bought both (still waiting for the hand bound edition to be finished and then arrive, it will be a few months).

This book is very hard to describe in words in a coherent manner. It is a wondrous mix of history, and gnostic speculation on the behalf of the author, Peter Grey.

He starts with the history of Babalon and her appearance in The Book of Revelations and why she is essentially feared by the Phallo-jealous monotheists. She empowers the freedom of enjoyment, pleasure and powerful-dangerous womanhood.

To quote two small paragraphs:

We are watchers of the dance of veils as Salome, Mary Magdalene, Isis and Astarte display the shrine of the mystery to our hungry eyes. She is a pole dancer, a dollar whore, a catwalk advert for impossibly red lipstick, a beautiful young girl. Your first love.

She is the Sophia of the Gnostics, a Black Madonna, a heroine of the heretic heart.

Both Aleister Crowley and Jack Parson's get a good lot of mention throughout the book, although in itself, it is not a Thelemic portrayed idea within the pages. Infact Grey spends a small amount of time politely attacking Crowley as a person and his documented behaviour towards women, whilst praising his spiritual practices and the path the To Mega Therion paved for the rest of us. In my reading, Grey's approach to Crowley didn't sit badly, although it may annoy or upset Othodox Thelemites partially.

The second third of the book, where the references to the O.T.O and Thelema exist the most follows on the history of Babalon to historical manifestations of her and her worship. Jesus is mentioned, along with Simon Magnus, Jack Parsons and other quite interestingly Iohn Dee, alongside his Enochian discoveries.

The third and final part explores the means to worship and bring Babalon into your life, through ritual practices, ingesting sacraments, sexual acts, bondage, chemicals and even as simple as inhaling the scent of a Damascus rose. But, as warned by the author, bringing Babalon into your life may leave scars, as she is a Goddess of both Love, Lust and War.

And last and not least, before words fail me entirely, the visual presentation of this book is breathtaking. White cover, with the BABALON lamen / sigil pressed into it in red, the bookends in a deep scarlet red, lovely thick stock paper, with smatterings of red text sprinkled throughout. And four gloss plates, illustrating Babalon herself in various forms. The Thoth Lust card by Lady Frieda Harris being the last plate.

I won't recommend everyone buys this, it may not be for them, but at least taste from its pages and get a feel for the Holy Whore, the Scarlet Woman that Rides the Seven Headed Beast.

There are two albums pending release from Uncomfortable Records.

The first is 'And upon her forehead was a name written..' [UR22.CD.2008], a tribute / invocation
the great goddess BABALON. Over 50 minutes of death industrial, dark ambient and drone.

The Second is the sound score [UR23.CD.2008] for the Deserted Hospitals II DVD (http://www.desertedhospitals.com/)
which Nimheil was asked to score, and after a long process the final pieces were put together.
There is over an hour and a half of sound score, so this will be a dual disk release.

However, for the release to work, it will all be pre-order copies.

$aus20 for 'And upon..' and $aus25 for the Sound Score. This includes all postage costs.
And for those that pre-order, there will be additional things thrown in, like artwork,
the first 49 copies of each numbered. Signed cases if you prefer and so forth. Plus you
can feel good knowing you are helping music to be created.

These CDs will be professionally printed CDRs. They are not gold-disk
mastered due to sky high costs. Unless I get pre-orders for 156 of each. Then I'll do
a full and proper CD release. The CDR service I use however, takes a lot of care in the
reproduction of the discs and they do real and proper printing on inserts, discs and so
forth. The quality is top-notch.

This will not ship straight away. Production is still required, but this secures a copy
as this will essentially be limited edition, with only the first 49 of each being numbered.

Review of 'Contemplation' on Heathen Harvest

A review that has made me very very happy:

If you have ever wanted to hear what desolation and emptiness sound like, then I suggest you grab yourself a copy of this third album from Perth, Western Australia’s Nimheil. This is the sound of finding yourself, alone and friendless, in some vast cold battlemented castle somewhere, situated in the middle of a deserted boulder-strewn and tree-less plain or atop a craggy precipice, with the freezing winds blowing through the arched windows and where the only things stirring are the time-worn brocade curtains. A place where not even a roaring log fire brings any warmth to deeply chilled bones and your only companions are the spectral shades of dead ancestors, unwilling to let go of the earthly glories they once possessed. One can also imagine massive lightless subterranean chambers echoing with the scurrying of troglodytic albino creatures and the dripping of water into bottomless pools. This is the world that Nimheil invites us to explore and contemplate through the medium of the sound-pieces on this album.

All fourteen of these pieces are quiet and very understated, and tending towards doom-laden gothic territory. However there’s more dimension to the music on here than just the dark and gloomy - above all this album explores the relationship of scale between the environment and the human; to be more precise, the vaster the landscape the more insignificant the human becomes. Nimheil utilises washes of gently susurrant washes and whispers, cold electronics, slow mournful percussion, waves of echoing sound, inhuman voices and the whistling of cold ice-bearing winds which together conspire to create the illusion of vast boundary- and border-less spaces and landscapes, capped by skies that are nothing more than huge roiling masses of restless boiling grey and black thunderclouds; where indeed anything on the human scale is completely overwhelmed and the sense of loneliness is heartbreaking. Across the distances creatures banished from the company of men howl mournfully and at length, issuing both a call and a warning; ultimately they are singing a dirge to the utter singularity of their endless existence. Vast places where, clothed in darkness, shapes become menacing and threatening presences; where imagination can spur the soul to depart the earthly realm.

There is something of the tragic here; this music describes places where the human is often unwelcome and out of synch; where sadness and loss clings to every surface and infuses every nook and cranny. Only the most malign, lonesome and loathsome of creatures would ever want to make their home here; certainly only the most misanthropic and sociopathic of people would even contemplate an existence here. And that’s the particular beauty of this music; what Nimheil has crafted here expresses these ideas and feelings most succinctly and perfectly – after all, the measure of these kinds of soundscapes (and concomitantly the artist who created them) is the atmospheres they evoke. Certainly by any criterion of success, the tracks on this CD definitely measure up and do so in buckets. For any of you out there that enjoy atmospheric and isolationist sonics this is essential listening I feel.

Thoughts upon initiation

Not sure where this post will go, but it will be amusing to write something purely from the streams of my conscious. Have had some interesting discussions with various wondrous people recently. Brethren especially, too many names that I will not mention for privacy and so forth, some local, some a wee bit more distant.

Some of the most interesting discussions have been about the transformation of self at the follow up to any initiatory action. Whether that be a 'typical' (is there such a thing) initiation within some group structure, or less obvious ones as a result of path working, or personal internalized ones as a result of birth of awareness on a subject. I see so many of my dear ones around me going through trials of the mind and heart and emerging from the other end, more learned and transformed into a grander form of themselves. Glowing and with more awareness and consciousness.

The only side effect as a result of such self awareness I have found in myself, is that it can result in a more animalistic side to be released. I can become overly protective of my dear ones, to the point that I have been known to end up growling and bearing fangs when I see them being threatened. But in turn, I also never desire to restrict them from their choices, so it can seem quite complex from the outside. And through my lifetime of initiatory actions, awareness of space has occurred. I see and sense so much around me, unless deliberately damped with alcohol (and even then it only works so well). Side effect of this is that I always feel like I am in heat, breathing in the scents of sex and lust that floats on the air, and at times makes mediation very very difficult. Shutting down the mind is hard at the best of times, harder still when you hear the faintest noises, and the touch of fabric is like a firm caress. On the flip side of that, intimacies are always quite mind blowing, and powerful. But never enough.

It is strange, reading over the last paragraph, I sound like a depraved fiend, whereas, I am merely feeling happy and comfortable in my physical shell.

Looking at a spiritual sense, I am greatly attracted to the violently passionate feminine energy. Whilst me, myself, am masculine. In my day, I had a great devotion to the concept of Lilith, and the crimson sexual essence she represented. Even now I hold her in great respect. And now, is the the Morrigan and Babalon, that are closest to me. Morrigan, forever etched in my skin upon the back of my neck. And Babalon in my words and dreams. Perhaps all three are there. Perhaps that is why in my ideal partner (of which I have) and my play things, I prefer woman that are sexual, dark, powerful and in turn choose to submit to my action, with a struggle, yet do not give up without a challenge to me, and who are not aware of their own scarlet role. And from there, those that need entire forcing do not appeal to me, because it suggests fear and lack of strength in their trust of me.

At long last, two releases coming out of Uncomfortable Records.

Firstly, and the biggest of the lot, the debut Album (but not first release) from MechCon, an Adelaide based Rhythmic/Power Noise project. He has performed at the Distorted Festival in Melbourne, he has done a number of live gigs, and now, here comes a solid disc of sonics.

Small run CDs in Australia are almost impossible). A collection of artists, some from UR some not, ranging from noise to industrial to dark ambient.

Started blurry and dark and the mind has not been as clear recently.

Descending from the heavens almost floating, observing an almost white
glowing line ontop a black field. As I got closer I saw it to be a
large Rosy Crois with even Crois arms (akin to the Iron Cross of
Germany or the QBL cross) in silver with a large silver rose overlayed
on the center.

The rose started drooping as I got closer, and on landing I looked up
to see a 'tomb' near by with a statuary lying on it, it seemed like an
'old style' knight but there was nothing to directly identify him with
any particular order of knights.

Within his hands was a sword (vaguely Templar style) which I grab, I
then looked up from it to see a moon rise in the distance, a silver
glow over the black plain (night time?) and it was causing a
silhouette with two mountains that resembled the Paps of Anu (breast
shape mountains in a pair).

I sheathed the sword and headed towards the mountains, in front of me
was a small rose which I picked up and put into my belt. Somehow I
ended up riding upon a horse, or in a chariot behind the horse. My
view of the position kept changing repeatedly.

I got to the mountains, it was very moon bright. And a door opened in
the 'right' one and a woman came out. Wearing a long deep blue hooded
cloak, with gilt edges. I could not see much more of her however. She
signaled me down into the doorway. Inside was very dark but I could
still her very clearly.

Eventually we were in a massive cavern, looking over a huge amount of
wood work, bridges and so forth. Lots of 'people' milling around and
doing things. Gave her the rose. She took it and stashed it in her
cloak. We looked down and saw an impossibly steep spiral path going
down. She was descending and I followed. Felt VERTIGO. Occasionally
jets of fire came from the walls (although at times they felt like
they were 'torches' on the walls, that were being blown by some wind).
I asked her what is her name. She shook her head. I asked "Can I asked
it of you?". She held a white finger to her lip. At this point I
choked physically just as an inverted triangle door appeared, like a
glowing fire. It opened and she went through it and I followed.

Inside was a green pasture, covered in flowers, edged by a very steep
valley. Picked her a flower, which she accepted with grace. Saw she
was wearing a white leine (type of Gaelic dress), with gold brocade on
the front. Odd skin.. Pale yet olive. Fine golden hair.

On the ground, was a giant bronze helmet, somewhat Hellenic / Spartan
in style. On the forehead of the helmet was something carved, which
became visible to me as I looked more closely at it.

I looked up and saw a storm approaching. Felt that I could see a
figure in it, but passed it off as a trick of my vision. She cowered,
and hid as a suddenly a huge winged / cloaked black figure flew down
from the sky.

Had to fight. Defending self against him. He was using a sword / whip
/ axe / scythe (his weapon kept transforming). Eventually stabbed him
in the shoulder and sliced him across the chest with my sword. Was
about to finish him off......

Site redesign and upping the use of this blog

I have done a major redesign and change around for the Nimheil website, so it is easier to use and more importantly easier for me to make future changes. As a result I have decided to use this particular blog service as a means to regularly make news / update posts rather than try to include such a thing on the Nimheil website.

Additionally of course there is the Legion of Nimheil mailing lists which often has before-everyone-else posts and list-member only releases.

The world at the moment amuses me no end. Whilst I am not making any money off of my artistic endevours, I am getting plenty of interesting opportunities to increase my artistic output. Some sonic work for videos, an upcoming split that should be interesting to work on. And of course, my album 'And upon her forehead was a name written..' should be out in the near future, pending the schedule of the record label.

I have basic ideas for an album after that, depending on who wishes to release it. So either it'll be something I put out on Uncomfortable Records, or who else offers. Only problem with my own label is the distribution issue and cost-of-physical-production in Western Australia.

And to add to the rumour mill, myself and my partner M., are looking to create a band / project together. Generally styled in the neo-folk tradition, with our own personal influences being added to it. Not sure when it'll start happening but it is sooner rather than later.

I have also gotten to urge to get back into writing too. Mind you, I have at least one book to get to draft version by December. But this is a Sinnsreachd thing as oppose to something musical or event occult related. However, the content is to do with spiritual and religious practices within the Sinnsreachd faith, so in that sense it could be considered occult.

But in the mean time, I should do more musical work. I am interested in doing more splits with people especially occult related themes. Although that said, some releases that I had some part on are available now on Bone Structure (So go buy the very affordable releases on that label) and of course an upcoming NetRelease as a tribute to Atrax Morgue. So yes, am looking for work paid or unpaid, physical or digital so that I can work on more material with an ends of sorts.

Nimheil has been signed in the UK

The Nimheil project has been signed to at least one record to be released by Hydra a subcompany of Salvation who in turn have done Redemption Films.

The release of the album looks to be February 2007 and production of the sonics are going well and harsh.

So far my posts have been a cryptic transposition from my live journal. Sad but true, but that doesn't mean I wont be posting real things in here about Nimheil.

Firstly, Nimheil is a project that is primarily dark ambient, with bits and pieces thrown into it as well as time progresses.

Almost all the tracks so far can be downloaded via http://www.nimheil.org/tracks.shtml and that is for free too.

Just finishing off another track tonight, a remix for the project Replogen that hopefully will get a bit of listen time at the Providence Noise Fest.

20050121 Entropic Ramblings tape.

Although the Entropic // Ramblings album got delayed due
to the foibles of hardware, it is back. I am releasing the album as an
ultra-limited release in tape format. There are only going to be 23 copies
made (around 14 at pre-ordered at this point in time) and will include a
bonus tape-only track (i.e: will never appear online unless someone
rips it) called F.C.P (Sunday Picnic). The tape insert
will include some hand done artistic finishes.

Additionally I have done a film clip for Isolation. Fairly abstract but to each their own.
